Since heat flow in a large ice sheet is very slow, the borehole temperature is another indicator of temperature in the past.
Aerobiology Research was first formed in 1994 to collect outdoor air samples and report on pollen and fungal spore levels. We started with 12 sites across Canada and now have 30 where samples are gathered and our laboratory analysis is done.As further layers build up, the pressure increases, and at about 1500 m the crystal structure of the ice changes from hexagonal to cubic, allowing air molecules to move into the cubic crystals and form a clathrate. The bubbles disappear and the ice becomes more transparent. We might even include some intense action (like in the movies). I am going to do a follow up of my last post regarding the pollen season of 2014 and the cold spring that occurred.
First I would like to refer to this term that has been used this season called the pollen vortex.
Greenland ice cores contain layers of wind-blown dust that correlate with cold, dry periods in the past, when cold deserts were scoured by wind.
Radioactive elements, either of natural origin or created by nuclear testing, can be used to date the layers of ice.
A vortex refers to weather, like the wind, and not to pollen.…
Endorphin is one of the natural “happy” chemicals released by our bodies.
Because the rate of snowfall varies from site to site, the age of the firn when it turns to ice varies a great deal.
